The Watford City Figure Skating Club is a non-profit member run club in Watford City, North Dakota. We are a member of U.S. Figure Skating (USFS) and offer Learn to Skate and Advanced Skating.

What is Figure Skating?

Figure skating is a sport that combines athletic skill, artistry, and discipline on the ice. As a U.S. Figure Skating–sanctioned club, WCFSC provides skaters of all ages and abilities the opportunity to learn, grow, test, and compete in a safe and supportive environment while developing lifelong skills and friendships.

What to Expect?

At the beginning of practice, you may see the skaters "skating around". That is called stroking! It gets their bodies warmed up and helps them, unknowingly, gain confidence in their stroking.

They then will break out into their groups. Figure skating is such a unique sport because even the smallest movements—like how a skater holds their edge or points their toe—make a big difference. Skaters spend a lot of time perfecting these tiny details, since they are the foundation for harder skills like spins, jumps, and advanced footwork. Mastering the basics builds the strength, balance, and control needed for everything that comes next.

Skating is a special sport because everyone practices their own skills at the same time on the ice. While your coach may be helping one skater, others are practicing their spins, jumps, or footwork nearby. This means you get to work on your own goals, go at your own pace, and still cheer on your friends while they do the same.

Games, help distract the skater from worrying about falling and allow them to have fun while learning new skills. Although, this should not be the focus the entire practice, you will see games throughout their Learn to Skate experience.
